This is handy if you are killed and respawn on a different island or back on the start island, BUT it only works for the boat you currently own. The boat you 'own' can be summoned (also in the 'Q' radial menu) to any island in the game from any other island in the game as long as you are standing at the water's edge.

This does not mean you can not use other boats, but you can not leave the current map with them. Just found out that its experimental and has bugs that makes it unplayable. I already lost faith in this game but then they came up with this 'amazing' 1.5 update that finally brings something new to the exploration mode. You can continue to transfer your ownership as you build bigger and better boats, but you can only own one boat at a time. The devs managed to hype me up and then slap me in the face once again. Then you must remember to transfer 'ownership' to the boat you intend to use for exploring. You take automatic ownership of the first boat you build, but apparently the raft doesn't count. The message given at the edge of the map means you must be controlling YOUR boat, not just ANY boat. LATER, when you are able to build an advanced boat, while standing on the boat's deck, you must open the 'Q' radial menu and 'Take Ownership' of that boat. Pay attention to medallion color for each island group light blue means single player purple means multiplayer. Sailing to another biome only requires that you select the biom and island group at the edge of the map. this one is a bit ambiguous, but the smallest sailboat can be built with logs, cloth, rope and a stone hammer - easily achieved after a day or two after a fresh start.
